YES. The series ended on a new years eve 1979. As the clock struck midnight and 1980 began, the screen went black as everyone shouted "Happy New Year".

i think of a few that have a very sturdy plot and are surprisingly humorous are: -lost -Buffy the Vampire Slayer -Angel in case you have HBO you are able to watch: -The Sopranos -intercourse and the city and so on. and so on. wish I helped. :)
