y=x^2 - 4x - 5
And you want it to be in the form y = a(x-h)^2 + k
Forget the -5 term for a moment, then you have x^2 - 4x; ask yourself, what you have to add to this to make a perfect square. The answer is +4; but if you add +4 then you have to subtract +4:
y=x^2-4x-5 = x^2-4x+4 -4-5 = (x-2)^2 - 9, where
a=1
h=2
k=9

x^2-4x-5
=x^2-4x+4-4-5
=(x-2)^2-9
=1(x-2)^2-9
Therefore y=1(x-2)^2-9

i think of you will have skipped over some parenthases. Please upload them for accuracy additionally, if something is squared, denote it x^2 as we've no wrong thank you to be attentive to if x2 is circumstances 2 or to the 2d capability

start with:
y+?=(x^2-4x+?)-5
y+(-4/2)^2= (x^2-4x+(-4/2)^2)-5
y+4=(x^2-4x+4)-5
y=(x^2-4x+4)-9
y= (x-2)^2-9

just try this one...y=(x-2)sqrd - 9
