well,loads of stuff really. like calling friends to ask for homework help, to talk about who made out with who in skool, to share funky files, i could go on.

Basically it breaks down to every other person on earth has one and if they dont they wont be cool. also teenagers are built with the capacity to talk for hours and hours without breathing. If they had to use the land line, everyone else in the house would be basically screwed. I imagine they also want one because that way they're free to get away from their parents and talk in private, about...private teenage things.
Parents buy them one cus then they can seem cool but really now they have a 24/7 tracking device. You can reach them no matter where theyre at and they know they have to answer when the folks call or hear about it for 47 hours when they get home. Also it provides peace of mind for both parent and probably teenager, to know that if anything happens they'll be able to get in contact with someone, and not have to search for a phone booth and spend 5 bucks trying to call home on a disease riddled telephone.
Lastly, now days if you dont have a cell phone you're considered Amish... Or technologically retarded...or, "technotarded" if you will.

I got a phone when I was in 7th grade..and at the time I wanted one because I thought they were cool and everyone else had one. But over time I've discovered that they're very very very convenient to have on you when you're somewhere and need a ride or need to call someone to make or cancel plans. It's also good because my parents can call me about things I have after school and when I need to be picked up. There have been times when something had been cancelled and if I hadn't had a cell phone I would've been sitting outside the school for an hour or 2. Cell phones are a great thing to have.

Teenagers most often want a cell phone to make themselves feel important. When I was in high school it was pagers. Everyone had to have a pager. I had one myself, until I realized that having one meant that my family and friends could contact me, anywhere, anytime. That was horrific. I am a quiet person by nature, and when I leave home to get away from people, I don't want them to be able to call me. Which is why my cell phone stays turned off in my glove compartment unless I need to call someone in an emergency.

Teenagers have cell phones becuase there friends have cell phones. Then they have to get a better one so everyone will like them and give them lots of attention. It could also be for privacy! :]

i for one think teenagers need one, especially when they start driving, what if they got a flat tire in the middle of the interstate at night? They neeed them worse than adults. These days aren't half as safe as they were when we grew up, lets face it. Cell phones can be really convienient, You wouldn't have asked this question if you had a teen.

to "communicate" with friends and family and everyone else in there life but especially true among female teens: they want one to chat with their b/f all the time. Heck I say make the teen pay for it themselves I am 17 and I have had to pay for mine from the get go. Plus it will teach them more resposibility!!!!!!!! because what will a teen learn if you pay their bill??? Nothing! I see spoiled teens all the time and there parents pay their way for everything I say if a teen wants one a teen needs to pay for one it is not the parents responsibility to pay their teens bill that the parents didnt use.

Hell if I know, and I'm only 20. Outside of my family I've probably made like 5 calls in the 3 years i've had the thing.

speaking from me personally i play 4 outta 5 sports and when i have away game i needed on so i didn't have to use The school.. the 2nd reason why i wanted on was so i could have freedom from the house phone.. 3rd so i could call my friends.. 4th so i could fit in every other teen has one

They want one because they are spoiled, their parents buy them cars, so why the heck not a cellphone? At least their parents might be able to reach them, if they would answer them. It's all about the material things and being "cool" when you are a teenager.
