Most likely wep/wap is not enabled.
Btw, there is no such thing as a wireless modem. Must be a router/modem combo.

YES this can be a very bad situation if the "wrong" person got into your network.
Mainly because of what their intention is, which in most cases is to gain access to your internet connection to do whatever they want. Things like trying to hack into government computers and the like is usually their goal.
And it will all come back to YOU if they are detected by the owners of the systems they hack into.
Read the manual and get the security turned on ASAP. There is no such thing a totally secured wireless network but if you make it slightly difficult many of the hackers will usually move on to an unsecured network such as your is at the moment.
Good luck and happy Thanksgiving.

Believe it or not! This is a common thing I've come across. My Wifi PDA is constantly telling me that there are unprotected networks available: 6 times in 200 yards! I have to turn it off as it drives me mad.
Your New Laptop is informing you that the WiFi/Wireless Network is unprotected.
Unprotected WiFi Networks allow anyone in range with a WiFi device access to your network. This is fine if you're a Web Café owner.
To set up some Wifi protection, you need to enable some protection on WiFi Server/modem. Refer to manuals with your Wifi Server/Modem to set this up.
If the Desktop is connected to this Wifi Server/Modem with a Ethernet Cable, I'd recommend setting up from there as it does not affect any Ethernet connections, only Wifi connections.
You can Set up a pass key which is very difficult for the hackers to crack. If you have set up a Pass key, you must insert it into any pc that connects to it. This will make Windows say the network is secure.

!. set up your net work with all PC's connected.
2. go to your modem/router's home page and set WEP encryption, on your Desk top, then re-connect your laptop Etc. and under properties/options enter the WEP code.
3. now your wireless network is secure.
4. run a good firewall on all PC's.
5. Run a good anti-virus and maintain it.

Go into your router's home page, http://192.168.1.1, then find the wireless security settings, Where they are depends on brand and model, so I can't give you specifics, but enable security and select WPA-2 with a shared key. It will give you a randomly generated key that you will need to enter in all the wireless PC's. You will now be secure and protected from neighbors using your connection, as well as tapping into your systems.
