ok here's my long answer,
if you want your horses muscles and tendons in his legs to be supported use SMB2s sports medicine boots 2. they offer great support and saved my horse from a possible leg break. they can be put on all four legs. they are used for western and english.
if you want to make sure your horse doesn't hit himself with his legs use splint boots. you can buy ones for front and hind legs. they need different styles for front and back legs. they are used mostly in english.
if you want to make sure your horse doesn't pull his front shoes/ bruise his cornet band use bell boots. they are for front feet only and go around the hoof. they are used in english and western.
if you want tendon support use polo wraps. they do the same thing as SMB2s but just as a wrap. make sure you have someone teach you to put them on right. they are used in western and english and polo.
if your horse doesn't need boots you don't have to use them. if you want to be safe it's a good idea.
you can buy all of these boots at statelinetack.com or horse.com.

I'm not sure for hunters but eventers can only use open front boots. I like the sports medicine for training, and they make an open front version but the leather present a much more professional look when you start to go big. Usually it's open front jumping boots with bell boots on front and a skid boot on back to protect from the opposite leg. In smaller competitions and obstacles under 36"-42" they tend to go bare behind unless the horse is known to bump itself.

I have "Heidi" boots and Sports medicine support boots for my horse. I use the heidi boots if i'm going to work her in the ring, especially if i'm going to jump her. I also foxhunt and when I do this, I put the sports medicine boots on her because sometimes when she goes fairly fast she clips the inside of her front legs with her hooves. I only put them on her front legs but it certainly wouldn't hurt to put them on the back too. If I were you, I would go to a tack shop where boots are and ask a person who works there. Good Luck!
