you can see if your computer is infected by running an antivirus or anti-spyware scan. but actually if your computer is infected you will see specific symptoms such as pop-ups with commercial/adult addverts, changed browser's homepage, changed desktop background, errors saying that unknown program needs to connect to the internet, computer shut down itself suddenly, etc.

Go to this Microsoft site and click on the "Full Service Scan" button. That will give you the most comprehensive check to your PC possible. Go back every week or so. You'll be amazed how good it is.

But you still need to install a good antivirus. Try free Avast.

For spyware you can download Spybot or Adaware. If you have a anti-virus program, update it and run it. If not you can run a online scan for viruses at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/.

Spybot can be downloaded at http://www.safer-networking.org/

Adaware can be downloaded at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

Both spybot and adaware are free. The scan at trendmicro is also free.

Good Luck.
