I do believe the commercialism is over the top and the societal pressures for gift buying are intense. I would say don't bother with the hassle of traveling during the holidays. Instead enjoy the better parts of this holiday by joining friends in a meal, some conversation, maybe take in a movie on a DVD and perhaps some simple gift giving. Gift giving doesn't have to be a financial concern, simple home made gifts or cards are fine. Another idea is to make gift "coupons" good for helpful chores (a night of baby sitting, help fixing that gate that's been broken for three months, etc.) a walk in the park, a picnic lunch or some other inexpensive or free event. I've been spending Christmas with my "family of choice" for the past 10 years and this year will make 11. I love my family but I enjoy the holiday with those who share my values.

Christmas is overly commercialized... people spend too much money on useless crap that most people do not need and who are pretty much, for the most part, ungrateful for.
I am the type of person who would be generous during the whole year instead of one day a year. I give to those in need all year round, give gifts to friends/family during the year when they least expect it and it comes to them as a surprise and they are more likely to remember the gift and who it was from, and they will appreciate it.
That's just me and my opinion.
I just hate it when the stores start decorating Christmas stuff during Labor Day weekend (Beginning of September). I'd like to get through at least Halloween before even seeing any Christmas decor.

It would of not got so out of control if prices weren't so high. I have 8 grand children and I have no extra money this year. I have always given great gifts to them and their parents etc. This year I am calling everyone this weekend to let them know no gift giving except for the children and no spending more than 10.00 each. Christmas is for family to get together and celebrate the birth of Christ in my family and church. So We Will all Bring food and enjoy each other. Christmas is for giving from the heart. Its not for receiving. I started making calls today and so far out of 3 calls they agreed. Most people are in this position and our bills have to get paid. Debt is to hard to get out of. So I suggest you call your family and let them know how you feel and if they don't understand, Spend it with close friends or visit nursing homes, homeless shelters etc. Merry Christmas to You. I hope your able to find a solution to enjoy that day.

The idea of christmas isn't over rated. What it has become, with the shopping, and spending, and music and need to receive, has become over rated.
I still think the idea of getting together for the holidays with family and loved ones is a good reason to celebrate, the rest of it can be done away with though I'd say.

If you're not having a good time with your family, try a different approach to Christmas. Get involved with a community feast, or help take Christmas to a nursing home. There's folks out there who wish they did have family to visit them.

Well, yes and no. christmas, in my opinion is getting way too commercialized for a religious holiday. I myself am not a christian man, but still celebrate it because the only other non-christian person in my family is my stepmother, and i go to places to see them and everyting. on the downside, it is the season of generosity, not DEALS DEALS DEALS and every screaming child does not need a heap of gifts, after all, everyone always aks me why my list is so small every year. kind of hard to answer, but i think its because we dont need to advertise everything, and we need to go back to what it was origionally supposed to be.
