I've been getting emails from various people claiming they are from various countries in Africa, and they will give me a portion of their wealth if I help transfer their funds to the US. Are these phishing emails? They are obviously to good to be true.

It's a SCAM, so use your SPAM blocker and/or REPORT SPAM feature.

Too good to be true is right. They want to attach your account, and transfer your money into their off-shore accounts. Even if only one out of ten thousand fall sucker to this, they still make a ton of money. Keep in mind that clever spammers can send out well over 10,000 emails per day. It is vital that we all use the REPORT SPAM feature with our Internet Service Provider, so others will not get that Blocked e-mail.

Don't tell me that you don't care about others, because YOUR bank's insurance company will end up paying in the end, ruining banking for everone including you.

Good luck, be safe, and Happy Computing!

This is the Nigerian scam. If anyone contacts them saying they are interested, they will ask for some money that needs t be used to bribe some official to get the money out. Then if you send that, some other official will need a bribe as well. They will keep you going this way until you give up.

They may also ask for account numbers to transfer the money into your account. They will use these numbers to withdraw any money you have.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of this scam. It has been going around for a very long time and they even joke about it on TV.

Some are some are not. Those which are not are actually
real offers...with a little twist though. The twist is called
money laundry and will get you a good chance of spending
the money with Bob and Bill in your cell.

It is a very common Nigerian scam. You can read more about these emails and the victims on the FBI homepage under Internet crime. You can also report it there online.
