Are you referring to tectonic plates? Geographically, North America is one continent, but geologically there are smaller plates that has been pressed against the main North American plate. The science is known as plate tectonics. For instance, the Juan de Fuca plate is one of these. The Pacific oceanic plate is also moving against the North American plate, and I would guess that the San Andreas Fault marks the boundary between the North American Plate and a mini-plate (technically known as a micro-craton) that has been accreted between the Pacific Plate and North America.

Sorry if this is not what you meant. I'm trying not to be too technical.

Geographically the next continent west of the USA is Asia.

Across the Pacific Ocean from the west coast of the United States is the continent of Asia

First of all the answer is yes.
The continent of Asia is West of the United States. I understand the situation of making this sensible to a 9 year old, but maybe with a globe and pictures taken by our astronauts when off the Earth would make the idea of a round Earth meaningful (I suggest www.nasa.gov as a starting point------lots of great visuals)
Best wishes to you--you are obviously a concerned parent.

In the Western hemisphere there are two cotinents, South America and Noth America, and partly Africa, and partly Antarctic continent. To the west from the United States begins Eastern Hemisphere, and the EuroAsia continent begins (the closest neighbour is Russia), and then Australia is on south, and Africa is to the south fro Europe (Europe is not a continent itself, it is a part of EuroAsia continent)

On the west or TO the west.

To the west: Asia

On the west, the Pacific ocean gets in the way.

Well, the world is round, so Asia would be to the immediate West.
