I went and had an ultrasound today. The doctor said I should be a little over 6 weeks according to my lmp. When they did the ultrasound, only a gestational sac was seen. no heartbeat. The ultrasound technician said that the sac measurements indicated that I was only 4 weeks and 5 days along and that a heartbeat wouldn't be seen that early. Has this happened to anyone else? Is the doctor just wrong on the dates or has my baby died and I'm going to have a miscarriage?

Heartbeat usually start about 5 to 6 weeks. You probably got your dates off a bit.
Yes, my doctor have had to change my due date many times because the dates I told him of the end of my last cycle was off.
Your baby is fine. Congratulations.

Yes the same thing happened to me. They oringinally thought I was 10 weeks. But I went for the first ultrasound and nothing showed up, like nothing at all. Then the following week only a sac showed up but no heartbeat. then finally on the third ultrasound finally a heartbeat. It was then they said I was 6 weeks, which means I found out I was pregnant when I was 3 weeks,

This early in pregnancy, it can be hard to tell. Did your Dr. order some bloodwork for you? Once the lab completes the bloodwork, you might have a better answer. Both scenarios you stated in yoru question are possible; it could still be too early to see the heartbeat OR the baby never developed and you may be on the road to a miscarriage. I've been in exactly your shoes before and it's a very frustrating waiting game. Good luck.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Most doctors don't even do ultrasounds till the LMP indicates 8 weeks for that very reason. Using your lmp to estimate the due date has always been an Estimate. Every woman's cycle is different, even if you have a 28 day cycle you don't necessarily ovulate exactly fourteen days into it. Don't worry, the doctor has done this before and worrying about it can actually cause complications.

Sounds like everything is perfectly fine. Just because your last menstrual period is known doesn't mean you ovulated at the expected time (sometimes these things can change from month to month)... 4 weeks would be too early to see a heartbeat. I went in for my first appt. at 8 weeks... so you just found out VERY early. Don't worry... during your next appointment you should be able to hear your baby's heartbeat. Best wishes and congratulations.

That happened to me, Dr. thought I should be 7 wks, but I was only 5 1/2 wks. Anyhow they said that it could be a blighted ovum (baby died or never existed) or it could be too early and everything could be fine. In my case everything was fine, the correct # of wks all depend on when you ovulated and got pregnant (which varies for most women). Good luck, if they said the size was right for 4 wks, then everything is probably fine, they wouldn't be able to detect a heartbeat yet. I know it's hard, but you'll just have to wait a few weeks to know for sure.

RELAX. That is very early for an ultrasound and it is very common to not be able to see much at that point. One of my earliest ultrasounds was at 6 weeks, and you could baerly see the baby at that point (Looked like a booger!) and the heartrate was barely detectable. Within a couple of weeks...everything was nice and clear. Also, with this pregnancy I thought we were 8 weeks along, and it turns out we were only 6 weeks. DON"T PANIC, Stress won't help any. Just try and relax, get some rest, take care of yourself and drink plenty of water.
Good luck and Congrats!

when i had my first ultrasound, i was 7 weeks and they could not see the heartbeat on the monitor. they did a vaginal ultrasound and you could see the fetus and could see the heartbeating. the fetus was about the size of a peanut. i do not believe that you are going to have a miscarriage. it is just a little too early.

doctors just guess your due date by what you tell them about when your last period was . today's technology is so advanced that they can pinpoint a more accurate date by ultrasound . don't worry about the baby not having a heartbeat your baby is just too small to detect it yet . before you know it that baby will be in your arms smiling at you .
