Why is it that if a journalist or writer dies, he is said to have written 30? Will really appreciate any info on this!

"30" is used at the end of any article written by a journalist. If a journalist dies, it's a nostalgic sign of respect.

it means for school children to spent 30 minutes a day doing all homework and writeing for 30 minutes

At the end of a printed news story, you put "-----30-----" - that tells the editor that it is the end.
