My mom wants to get my dad a PDA for christmas, but it's hard to research for something you know next to nothing about. We need to figure out what PDA would be good for a first time user, and he wants one that he can use to download information onto from the computer for work (such as a drug refrence book). And if you know any prices it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with WebChic. I have a Dell Axim x50v and it's great! You can upgrade the memory, it has both SD and CF memory slots.

You can compare the different PDA's at Dell.com. For the Palm devices, you can go to Palmone.com to compare their devices. Then you can go to HP.com to compare their IPAQ's.

Key things to look for are:

CPU speed
Memory capacity (either SD or CF or both)
Screen resolution (640x480 is the best)
Networking capability, either wi-fi, bluetooth, or both.

Most new PDA's can play audio and video, it just depends on how you want to do it. There are some really good web sites that cater to any of the PDA's that are out there, so just do a google search of "applications for XXX".

Good luck!!

I personally like my Dell Axim - it's less expensive then many of the brands of pocket pc's - and pocket pc's have the advantage of having the look and feel of your regular PC since it is a mobile version of the same software.

If he isn't going to be using it to connect to the net remotely from hotspots, they start at $299 - but they are ALWAYS running sales, so just keep your eye on the Dell.com site for discounts - you could find it for as little as $234 with the right deal. Dell also has two sites on eBay, one for new hardware and one for refurbished pieces (that one is Dell Financial Services).

Good luck!

I have a Palm Tungsten T5 and its pefect... lots of memory... lots of capacity... except doesn't have internet unless you buy the chip to connect WiFi... I don't really need internet on it. Check on www.palm.com for the best deals. My own opinion, Palm based products are better than Pocket PC.

You can email me at JAArceG@yahoo.com and I will email you back a link for palm purchases...
