could i drop a later TDCI engine in a 1995 petrol 1.6 zetec Efi ford ESCORT. and could the new engine be, say 2002 or later model. focus fiesta mondeo or any other model?

if you stick with cars of the same make and floor pan you should have no trouble [axle length, transmission bolt patterns, etc] if you have an automatic trans i would not put a diesel in front of it as G.M. found out in the eighties the diesel vibrations will destroy the pump and converter [unless heavily modified] with this being said i would recommend keeping the donor engine/trans together also the final drive ratio will be more suitable in the "diesel transaxel" than the old "petrol unit"
be careful jacking and blocking as you can be dead only once.

On later model vehicles, the best way to change would be replace the vehicle with one with a diesel already in it. The engines are computer controlled and the wiring is not the same, so a new wiring harness would have to be made. The fuel system is also different and would have to be replaced also.

Sure, all you need is a very big wallet full of money because after you replace the fuel system, computer, wiring harness, and engine you could have bought new cheaper.
