This would depend on the OS. XP doesn't like drivers that are not passed by the windows device manager.
Find out what driver this is and if you really need it.
Run msconfig->choose to load a diagnostic start up and see if the problem persists.
Does this crash at startup or when you are trying to do something specific.
Check all of your hardware in the hardware device manager, update any devices with error symbols next to them (yellow question mark or red crosses). Reboot (changing the boot options in msconfig back to normal)
You can download hijack this which will tell you all of the processes (hidden ones aswell) and services and drivers that are loaded and are running. Make a log file of all these items.
Find out which device driver is causing the problem and uninstall it.

You have a driver pointing to a device that has been removed or an incorrect version for a current device. Boot into "Safe Mode" (F8 while booting) and either uninstall the driver or find the correct version.

Device drivers usually refer to software that you install to run something else, like a digital camera. If you've installed some new software similar to that, remove it and see if it helps. That is, if you can get the computer on long enough to do that. Good luck.
