I need a song to sing for my school's musical auditions, and it has to be upbeat. I'd prefer it to be from broadway. I was going to sing Popular (from Wicked), but i decided not to. Any suggestions, other than popular?

You Can't Stop The Beat -- Hairspray

There are a ton of different songs, but one I can think of thats fairly simple to learn and sounds really good is 'Good Morning Baltimore' from Hairspray. I sang that for an audition once, and I'm singing "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy" from South Pacific for an audition Monday. Some others are:
"My New Philosophy" -You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (though this song is quite similiar to 'Popular', even sung by the same woman)
"Let's Hear it for the Boy" -Footloose
"I'm Holding Out for a Hero" -Footloose
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" -Thoroughly Modern Millie (a lot from this musical is pretty upbeat)
"My Strongest Suit" -Aida
"Here I Am" -Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
"Someday" -The Wedding Singer

I don't know your voice type or anything, so I'll just tell you that up-tempos that I have done at my past two vocal competitions and what I"m working on for the next one:

The Simple Joys of Maidenhood (from Camelot)
Many a New Day (from Oklahoma!)
Adalaide's Lament (from Guys and Dolls)

Other good ones to look at are: Here I Am (from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), The Beauty Is (from The Light in the Piazza).

If it's at all possible, find a song from a show by the same composer as the show your school is doing. Or by a composer who was a contemporary of that composer. For example, when I auditioned for "Oklahoma!", I sang something from "Carousel." When I auditioned for "Titanic", I sang something from "The Scarlet Pimpernel". For "Brigadoon", I chose from "Camelot". For "Peter Pan" I sang from "Once Upon a Mattress" and for "Anything Goes", I sang from "Kiss Me Kate." I don't know if any of that helps, but there you go!

There are a few books you should look at. The Teen's Musical Theatre Anthology has some nice things. There are some great things in "The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology" which now has four volumes in each voice type. A good music store will have it.

One I really like, though, is "Much more" from The Fantasticks. Great song for a young woman. "I could have danced all night" from My Fair Lady is a classic and might be good for you, too.

Good luck!

Barbra Streisand's Don't Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl is very positive. Put on a Happy Face from Bye Bye Birdie is also very upbeat and optimistic. You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel is a very affirmative song. Get Me to the Church on Time from My Fair Lady is an upbeat, happy song.

How about "There's No Business Like Show Business" from Annie Get Your Gun?
That song is upbeat, easy to learn, fun to sing. It's very common so if you want something not as common...

"I Cain't Say No" from Oklahoma! is a great song. LOADS of fun to sing. I am in Oklahoma! right now but I got Laurey instead of Ado Annie (which is better anyways because it is the lead LOL).

it really depends on the type of voice you have, and although not all directors are the same, some directors perferr curtain songs to others... if you want to suck up(which isnt really the best way to go) do one of the songs from a musical they like, also do one that you already sorta know.

my favorite musicals have have some good solos are le mis, beauty and the beast and miss saigon.

best of luck
