It has to be a problem with the transmission or the clutch.

"Lock" on steering column isn't releasing! Pull down on handle, and "shake" steering wheel back and forth "vigorously", - it may just be "stuck" and will release if you put enough "force on steering wheel while pullling down gearshift handle! This is not an uncommon occourance!

Has nothing to do with a "bad transmission", - and automatic transmissions don't have to worry about a "clutch" as they are all internal on automatic!

If you can't get it loose this way, try blocking the "non driven"
wheels, and jacking it up (one drive axle side), this will take all the load off the "park pawl" (the part that locks the transmission in "park"! After one wheel is off ground (& parking brake off), - do the "shake" on steering wheel again!

Our car has always done this every month or so (1 time), --and I have had to get quite "violent" with it, -- (allways stopping before I break something of course)!

the psychic- says some cars are equipt to not let you shift from park unles the brake is fully depressed, gets a feeling it is the safety linkage that doesn't allow you to shift into park while the motor is running and car moving in the transmission, is worn or bent. yeah interlock

Are you parked on a hill? If so it may just be on a bind, and if thats the case just give it a pretty good yank and it should come out. Also if you do park on a hill, keep your foot on the brake as you put it in park, set the e-brake, then take your foot off the brake.

Most likely it's a problem w/ the interlock -- the thing that requires you to have your foot on the brake before you put it into drive.
