i know I can sing. I'm not a pro of course, but I know I'm not that bad. Whenever I sign under my breath and someone hears it, they tell me how good it was. But when someone asks me to sing out loud, I get nervous and sing in a strained voice, so it comes out sounding like crap. I went to watch our school talent quest and I can probably sing better than a few people there, and I want to enter next year. But I get nervous just thinking about it. How can I overcome this?

Become an actor. Be someone your not. Tottally get into this characters mind and body. Believe you are this person and you will be fine.

I used to act in community theater. That's what I did every time I got out there. And I've never been scared on the stage. Behind the curtain, now that's another story.

In the first place, don't picture anyone in their underwear. Think about it. What are you afraid of? They don't have guns. They won't shoot you if they don't like your voice. I've bombed in front of audiences lots of times and I'm still alive and well. I still have the right to vote and I'm allowed out in public. Nothing is going to happen to you if you blow it! Don't be afraid! There's nothing to fear! Get up there and sing as hard as you can! There's also an upside, a big upside. If you kill 'em...man does that feel good! Like nothing else. Make it a no lose situation. If you bomb, (and I don't think you will) you conquered your fear. You learned something. You will be a lot less afraid (if you're afraid at all) the next time. If you're great, GREAT! You'll feel what very few people ever get to feel. That's why people become performers.
Sing as hard as you can!

I think it would help to sing like crazy infront of people you are really comfortable around (for example, your mother or best friend or even a pet)! I mean, every oppurtunity you get! Then slowly add more people (start out infront of your mother, then your mother and siblings, so on, so on). Keep working on that and building your confidence... it will take time but soon you'll be singing infront of giant crowds like a pro! Dont give up and good luck!

Take a singing class and the teacher can probably get you to overcome the problem and project your voice whenever you want.

Just do something infront of an audience, that's what I did. In fifth grade, I really wanted a solo in my first concert, and I just tried out and I got it. I never had stage fright again.

practice singing with small audiences
and the voice lessons/singing class are an excellent morale booster. my voice instructor had me singing ranges i didn't even know i had in me and encouraged me to sing in front of others. it gives you a chance to practice and even get discovered. keep on keeping on!
