You really should have at least some kind of television in your house for important news coverage. Even one of the $19.99 black and white 5 inch screens would be good for that. Beyond that, determining whether or not to get a larger TV really depends on when you intend to watch.
Many TVs are under $100, and if you live in a metropolitan area, you can get many network stations for just the cost of your TV. Just using your antenna is fine if you only plan to watch after 5 on weeknights, because before that, it is all talk shows. You can get all of the major series shows, and sitcoms such as Seinfeld, which is extremely entertaining. Even for this viewing, getting a TV would probably not be a waste at all.
If you prefer more educational programming, such as Discovery, Discovery Health, The Learning Channel, Food Network, and HGTV, you should get cable. Be careful not to get the lowest level from you cable company, though, because that line-up will be nearly exactly the same as what you recieve over the airways. The second tier of service should include all of those channels for approximately $40 per month.
If you would like a wider range of choices and you are into movies, go for digital cable if your cable company has it. The lowest level of digital cable is more than you will ever watch, and it will have a variety of movie channels. Your cable company may also include On Demand shows, many of which will be free, depending on your service area.
The television set does not have to be large or expensive for you to enjoy programming and news. Watching the news on television is a more interactive experience that reading it in the paper or hearing it on the radio. You can see what it happening as it happens. Television can also be highly entertaining, and if you opt to get cable, television can also be highly educational. Further more, if you sign up for digital cable, you will enjoy an array of movie channels, soap operas, and travel information.
You may feel that television could detract from your life, but used in moderation, it could only enhance everything you do.

We keep our TV in the closet in case we want to pull it out for some reason. We pull it out maybe twice a year for something and put it back the next day.
I don't think it's worth it at all. I wouldn't buy one if I didn't have one. There's not really anything of worth on TV. You can have more fun doing just about anything else.

You can buy one for pretty cheap these days, they can prove "entertaining" during the shorter daylight in the northern half of the globe.
Don't go for cable or satellite, and be sure to sell it when the days are back to 12 hours.
However with a computer and a phone, you may find the TV a little "old school".
