Age appropriate games, I have no problem with. I do have a problem with video games being babysitters, and the first thing I think of is where are the parents, how long have they played in one sitting, and why don't the kids play outside instead of sitting on the couch. My son was allowed 2 hours a day, especially in the winter when it got dark at 4pm. I babysit his son, and right now, he gets 1/2 hour a day, and it is snowsled racing or car racing. (he is almost 5), and he is outside a better part of the day when he is here. Even I do not play the violent ones. I have played Tomb Raider, and that was enough for me. I didn't appreciate having my eyes pecked out by bats or getting attacked by dogs. And the violent games are much worse than that, I imagine.

Violent games were never allowed in my house. There are plenty of other games around to play. Just the commercials about the games available was enough for me to say no. If the games that were in the house was not enough to keep anyone entertained for a couple of hours, then you found something else to do.

I know this doesn't help with the effects on kids for your report, but mine was not allowed to play them. That is my view of the games . Good luck on your report.
