What type of fermentation takes place when making root beer?

I'm doing a project in school and we're making root beer and I am kind of confused. Are there specific types of fermentation?!

Fermentation is the process sugar is converted to alcohol by yeast. Root beer is non-alcoholic, so there is no fermentation happening.
