Well.........if you are gonne do what JESSICA H suggested......don't forget to pop the hood and remove the master cylinder cap and wrap a rag around the opening to prevent overflowing brake fluid from getting everywhere. Then, when you are done compressing, replacing and putting the caliper back on....PUT THE CAP BACK ON BEFORE YOU PUMP YOUR BRAKES!!!!Otherwise you will get air in the lines and then you will have to bleed them(Pain in the butt!)

The rear brake linings are the two out of adjustment or nicely worn and likely, the front disc pads are quite lots worn too. you've the front pads replaced and rotors grew to become. examine out the rear shoes and drums and replace the shoes and have the drums grew to become if the mechanic recommends it. while you at the instant cannot do the interest your self, take it to a brake save like Midas. i've got labored on my very own autos for some years and after 2 or 3 years, substitute the brake fluid to do away with any an infection. The interest is amazingly ordinary. Siphon the fluid from the grasp cylinder, fill up with sparkling fluid and then separately open a bleeder screw on each and each wheel and enable an oz. of fluid drain out. do not enable the grasp cylinder run low or you will get air interior the gadget and complicate the interest. i've got got here across with the aid of fixing fluid, that I even have much less brake cylinder problems whether this is all as much as the motor vehicle proprietor as what he needs. P.S. Forebird autos interior the 60's used DOT 2 fluid and not DOT 3,4 or 5 as in today's autos. The wheel cylinders extensively utilized viton seals while today's autos use ethylene/propylene. interior the 60's I used gas to bathe brake areas. Do it today and you will wreck the seals and fluid.

You should be able to call any garage and get an estimate, prices will be different. I change my own brake pads, take off the tire, remove two bolts from the back of the caliper and pull the caliper up and off, remove the old pads and compress the caliper with a C-clamp and slip in the new pads. Bolt everything back on and pump the brake pedal a few times and your ready to go.

First of all ... WAY TO GO GIRL .. I love BMW .. got 528i here myself ... anyways ... have a look at this search .. i think it will help
http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&lr=&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=%22brake+pads%22+%2B+price+%2B+%22BMW+316i%22
so about $69 and they come in pares .. two to the front and two to the back ..
Plus .. usially they will ask u to get a break sensor .. about $10 .. not sure ...
and they will take some $ for their work .. about $25 ...
so that would count up too : 69 + 10 + 25 = $104 ..
and lets hope u r changing them before they damaged the Discs .. other wise that would cost u more ..
good luck

Depends on the car - you don't say what make it is but the front pads are normally cheaper that the rears, if (UK) a garage wants more that £45 then you should see if any of your pals can do it for you. It isn't very difficult and the average price for the pads alone should be around £25-30 in a motor factors or spares shop.

it really depends on the cost of ur brakepads. i change my own and most parts stores offer 2 or 3 different priced pads, depending if they are lifetime warranted. im sure they're lil more exp for a bmw, not sure. most places vary in price, but i think a good guestimate would be around 100.00 +. its worth calling around to different shops, and stay away from dealerships!! they are generally twice as high.

i recommend only bmw parts. brake parts are all different in quality. these cars are designed to stop, maneuver and perform. you will lose some of that with cheaper parts and cause vibrations when braking. a common complaint on bmw's with aftermarket brakes.
