Hermit crabs are a good choice. They are small, affordable, and really fun!

If you get more than one, you can have crab races with them.

Even if you buy a small container of crab food, it will last nearly a year because they don't eat very often.

They are really creepy when they come out of their shells, because they look like aliens. But, I promise that you will get used to them very quickly.

I would also suggest a turtle or a fish. Fish are kinda boring though.

Any animal you get is going to shed hair IF it has hair. You are looking for an animal that is responsive yet all but carefree...there is NONE made like that. Pets are a huge committment on the owner's part...this is not a toy you can play with today and put down tomorrow...you must be there for the full life of the pet, no matter how you look at it...your pet should not become the responsibility of your parents. The only animal that works is some kind of dog, and dogs live to be 15 or more years...that is a long term committment on your part, one which you cannot make at this point in your life. You will only be home for another 5 or so years, and at that point, a dog could well become a liability to you. Better off with fist at this point, fish you can deal with.

You should get a snake. Try a corn or rat snake. You only need to feed it once a week, and it's very quiet. As far as it being social, that depends on what you mean. A snake won't understand a word you're saying, but I'm sure your friends would get a kick out of playing with the snake.

Rabbits ARE social animals.
Other than that, there are rats (but if you think hamsters are ugly...).
Guinea pigs are good pets, but a little skittish.
I'm sorry, but you are looking for a quiet & pretty shed-less animal that doesn't eat much.......and basically, they do not exist.

Hermit Crabs. They are very social creatures. Get a cage and put sand in the bottom. They need stuff to climb on. Water is very important. They eat pretty much anything (peanut butter, bread crumbs, jelly, etc). It is better to have more than one crab. Ask about them in your local pet store. They're amazing!

Sounds like you could use a Havanese Dog. They don't shed, are friendly, don't bark unless a stranger comes up and is cute as a button!

I'd say a fancy rat because their adorable and extremely sociable and low maintenance, but if you think hamsters are ugly your probably not a rat person.
