If you know that the item is of value, google a search on the item itself. Invest a little time in looking at the first twenty or thirty listings. Usually you will find references on the items condition/worth within the articles listed. You may have to be creative in how you write your google header and search several variations on the item you have.

Failing all else, eBay itself is a good idea to use. A search on eBay will usually give you a good idea of an items worth, based on the starting bids and the amount of activity an item receives in the bidding process.

Items listed at $.01 to $.99 are usually set that way because the item holds little value in the owners eye, or just the opposite, the owner is confident in the items worth and wants to encourage the participation of many bidders. Watch those auctions to see where they go.

Usually though, there will be owners who will list their item at or close to the items relative worth. Watch these, especially the ones with buy it now attached to the auction. If these are getting purchased its a good bet that the item was listed at an acceptable value to those willing to bid... and you will get a feel for an items relative worth or value.
