Viruses can come from several sources and usually worms are included in computer virus discussions.
1. Something you open or view whether intentional or unintentional
- Website
- email
- email attachment
- infected disk or CD
- other download (music, video, games, etc)
2. Just being connected to the internet without adequate protection from firewall. Some of the most widespread worms including slapper and sasser were spreading to any computer online that did not have a specific port blocked.
As a result, most ISPs in the US now block the ports that these worms targetted.

Usually via attachments to email or via discs from friends that have unknowingly picked them up. Increasingly these days, via anything you plug into the computer to download. Also visiting certain sites and peer to peer file sharing.
Get yourself AVG and a decent firewall, never open an email from anyone you do not know andd you should be OK..

personally i think they get on your computer by your curiosity at opening e mails that come from people you have never heard of and downloading the things that appear on your browser pages such as flash player 9 etc...scan anything your not sure about with your security and if you are really not sure about something then don't even entertain it at all just leave it.
