My Toshiba Protege laptop keyboard letters 9, O, L, . , do not work. All other buttons work, what could this be that's causing the keyboard not to function properly.

The cause could be that your keybord might have been spilled on by liquids, putten too much preesure on, or the cables from inside might have been removed by mistake.

I had a similar problem with one of my laptops only my key (it was the V) would come on and stay on. I went to Radio Shack and purchased some contact cleaner. Then I pried off the key and sprayed the contact cleaner onto the part that was still there.
I let it dry and came back later, put the key back on and it has been working ever since. Stuff gets under the keys and sometimes stops them from working. If it is dust, you could try the canned air to blow under the keys. Might work.

More than likely you have spilled somthing you can gently prise the keys up and off and give them a clean (nothing sticky) like diluted fairy liquid with a damp cloth, i have afew keys that bit the dust and i ended up re-routing the keys to ones i didnt normally use like the left shift key for @ (as i lost that)..
