I was just wondering how people do this kind of thing? Like how do they decide which bits to leave in and which bits to omit, as well as changes such AS in The Devil Wears Prada- in the book Miranda is English not American, Nigel is black, Miranda doesn't call Andrea Emily..@ least not in the 1st 3 chapters that ive read lol...why do they make these kinds of changes?

Marketing, marketing, marketing. Movie producers make stories from books as appealing to a general audience as possible. Hence, characters are changed, plots are redone, and the entire story takes on a whole new life. Books are often inner-reflective, meaning that we get inside a character's head and their inner thoughts much more. You can't do that in film unless you have the character constantly narrating which would be very annoying. Movies take a more precise story due to time and in doing so lots of things are cut out and things adapted to adhere better to actors and directors who may be attached to the project.

you have to realize that the screenwriter must present an engaging plot in the constraints of an hour and a half. which means that some of the plot elements will be cut. they usually try to seek out the most developed characters, or they will add another character if they feel they want to create an emotional balance or foil. many endings also sometimes get the 'hollywood' treatment
