I'm just a little worried about it as i need to go on a long journey next weekend and if i don't have brakes, then that could be a problem!

As you can tell, i don't know anything about cars!

Dont just top up your level like everybody telling you ,there is a reason for level to go down and that is usually your brake pads are worn down meaning your brake caliper needs more fluid to push pads on to your discs to stop your car. So if you just top up level and then change pads brake fluid will overflow as you now have to much fluid in system. Also only use dot4 brake fluid so in short check your brake pads are not worn out before you top up brake level .

If the light has come on for your brake fluid the most likely reason is that the brake pads are worn down. This makes the fluid level drop - thus sending the warning signal. Have your pads checked for wear before they wear out completely and start to damage the discs. Do not top up the fluid level as this will make you forget about the problem. If your pads are OK them you must have a fluid leak. Look to a friend with a bit of mechanical know-how to do the investigation. That way to won't have a garage con artist stitching you up. Sooner rather than later is definitely the best option. Drive safely. Russ B.

IN your case its just a matter of topping up the brake fluid. Yours is a E36 compact model and that engines pretty good but it runs quite hot. Top up engine oil, brake fluids. I think for your case it is a dot 4 and above. You only need your car checked when the service level indicator tell you so.

most vehicles indicate low brake fluid if the brake fluid cylinder is low this is easy for you to do just open the hood and find the container that says Brake fluid it usually has a round metal spin off cap or black rubber cap to fill up the brake fluid in it as soon as you fill it up the light will go off there is a FULL and LOW indicator line on the outside of the container which should be see through so save the money and do it yourself just go to the local checkers or autozone and buy brake fluid in fact i think they will fill it up for you

Driving isn't just point and go you know. As someone has said there is a reason you have lost fluid.... Take it to a garage, you may need new pads and the system bled.
