I just answered a similar question... your question makes me so sad and frustrated, because these awful organizations (like John Robert Powers, john casablancas, etc) have been out there for years trying to take people's money, and people can get the word out again and again, and then a new group of young people (with their parents) come along and get scammed again and again.

guys - a legal talent agent takes NO money up front. They also don't run "classes" (and especially not modeling classes!) and they don't have a certain in-house photographer they insist you take pictures with (for $800 a session!) NO NO NO!

A legal, legit talent agent takes 10% of money YOU EARN. That means - if you don't have a job, you earn zero and so do they. (a manager is a little different and they usually take 15%.)

the only way an talent agency is making $1500 is off a job where YOU made $15,000 and they are taking their cut.

You do not need these places! They recruit at malls and that kind of thing. They are in the business of taking kids and parents money. They stay in business because they prey on people's feelings and exploit their dreams. Please, spread the word - they are useless unless you like throwing your money out the window.

this makes me so mad and sad! I'm sorry this happened to you.

Don't think about getting a Talent Agent!

The first thing you should do is audition, and book the job, so you can invite Talent Agents and Casting Directors to "see you perform!" Get out there and book some acting jobs.

When you invite Talent Agents to see you perform you must present a "great perfornance!" As a Talent Agent I went, at the request of an actor, to see his performance. He had a great "look" and I thought, if he can act, he would be a great asset to the client list for our Talent Agency. Unfortunately, he was awful! I left the theater. Wannabe actors, please, don't have an inflated view of your acting range and skills. Acting is difficult.

Be sure you are well-trained. Take classes as often as you can.

Typically, Talent Agencies look for new clients by attending theatre performances. If they like you, they will ask you to call their office for an an interview/audition.

There is never a fee associated with being signed by a Talent Agency.

The commission for a Talent Agency, that is a member of The Association of Talent Agents is "typically" 10%.

If the agent is legit, they won't charge you anything upfront. And sometimes they are legit and still charge you upfront- but then that would be because that agency isn't having much luck with getting their actors/actresses jobs. So before you decide to go stick with that agent, make sure you do your homework, find out if you have to pay anything without doing any work. If they want you to, forget them!

An agents commission is 15%. But he has to get you the jobs first.

what makes you think you are ready for an agent? if you were, you'd know how to get one. Agents do not take everyone who comes a callin'. They only want the best looking, most talented. If you do not qualify, .......
