Wait, MacWorld takes place on January 8th 2007. If you can wait that long it'll be worth it in case of an iPod announcement.

you could wait every year and never buy one, and give the money to charity ;-)
no seriously I mean, technology never stands still, and never will, and if you want to be sure that what you buy will not be at least partly obsolete within 6 months, you cannot buy an iPod, or a digital camera, or a GPS navigation unit, you name it.
buy one, it's useful and fun, and who cares if you don't have the latest one (should one come out soon).
if you're buying one to listen to music and watch podcasts, this should not make any difference.
if you're buying one to look cool by owning the latest one at all times, either find a way to earn enough money so you can buy the latest gadget every month - or just show off w fakes!

The way I see it is your always going to be waiting for the next generation if you don't just give in and buy it now. If you are really worried about it you might just wait until the next one comes out, and plan on selling it and getting the 7th gen right when they come out if you are really concerned with always having the newest stuff.
