You probably mean the "G7." These were the seven countries with the largest economies: United States, Germany, Britain, Italy, France, Canada, and Spain. Representatives from each country would meet periodically to set economic policy.
As Russia moved more and more into a market economy, it demanded to become part of the group. In the early 2000's, it became part of the "G8."
The G7 really controlled the GATT -- General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs -- which essential regulated world trade.
GATT was replace by the WTO -- World Trade Organization -- which is the powerful force behind globalization.
