did you switch the old DVD drive's switches in the back to allow it to be a slave DVD Drive. To do this find out what make and model DVD drive it is and go to the products websight and download an instruction Manuel. also try to see what happens if you plug your old DVD drive streight into the Mother Board.

If you mean that you put both together into your PC make sure that the jumpers settings is correct, one should be set as a Master the other as a Slave.

if you have it on the IDE bus make sure you set the "master" "slave" jumpers correctly. You may need to set it in BIOS, but it ought to detect automatically. Are you sure you plugged it in properly, and power?
