you will see an increased number of proteins in the instances of viral infections (meningitis) and certain disease states (multiple sclerosis). RBC's are increased if trauma occurs, such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage or other spinal cord damage. another instance would be if the physician performing the lumbar puncture wasn't very experienced...they will get a blood-contaminated specimen.
