Have you checked that its enabled in both WLM and WMP 11 .
To do this: click on the arrow next to your personal messasge in WLM and make sure that "Turn on 'What I'm listening to.'" is ticked.
Then check in WMP that the plug-in is enabled for it to connect to each other. Do this by moving over the "Now Playing" tab along the top, and clicking on the arrow which appears, then go to Plugins > Other and select Windows Live Messenger Plug-in.
If its not there, you may want to reinstall WLM.

Check the mp3 isn't 'read only'. I didn't like either WMP 10 or 11 as they were very picky with mp3's. So in the end I removed them and I'm back with Version 9 on both of my computers.
