Does everyone who gets a c-section end up with "cesarean-shelf"? Where the belly sort of hangs over the incision site? I have a friend who recently had a c-section and she is wondering what other post-cesarean mothers have expereinced. Is your scar noticeable? Have you had any lingering problems since the surgery?? Thanks.

I had a C-section 10 months ago.

One side is slightly extended beyond the incision and the other side healed perfectly flat. On the side of the incision where it is puffy the scar is also darker and wider than the better-healed side. My incision area aches premenstrually.

It almost looks on me like the puffy side was the result of my tissue shrinking at an uneven rate (like maybe one side had a little less elasticity / more stretch marks than the other, so it didn't return to normal the same way).

I think there is a whole range to what is normal, but one thing is for certain -- you'll never be the same after giving birth, especially after Cesarean.

After 2 cesareans I have a noticeable "shelf". I haven't really been faithful at working out though. My scar is a bikini cut, but it is a noticeable line. I have a friend that gave birth to two kids the au natural way and she, too, is not faithful at working out, but she doesn't have a shelf!

I have had two c-sections and have been pretty lucky -my belly wen tack to being flat-however I have had some friends that had the shelf and it went away within a couple of months-my scar is very faint now and they only problem I ever had was when scar tissue inside my belly attached to my bladder and they had to go in and scarp it off-other than that nothing major has happened

Is this her first litter? Since she had a cesarean, she does not realize they are hers -- she went to sleep and then was thrown into a box with a bunch a little things trying to suck on her sore tummy. Give her time to feel better, but go get puppy milk and bottles for now. Don't forget to wipe their bottoms with a warm washcloth to make them go potty after wards. Keep trying to have mom nurse them - every few hours till she can take over.

I have a tiny bit of shelf, my scar is pretty low and not that noticeable after 2 years. I still have pain at my incision site, but it has to do with the scar tissue inside and other surgeries I have had in that area as well. I cant do high impact stomach exercises like sit ups because of my endometriosis pain so that is why I still have a tiny shelf not that noticeable, when I wear clothes you cant tell and i dont look fat

i had a c-section 16 months ago and my belly hangs over the scar. and the noticability of the scar depends on how well each individual heals, mine for instance isn't that noticeable but my moms is because she doesn't heal as well as i do. i haven't had any problems since the surgery at all i guess i would call myself lucky. i just wish i could have had a tummy tuck while i was in the OR. tell your friend congradulations on the new bundle of joy.

I have had three children, only the last was a c-section. I have no shelf and I could wear a very low cut bikini and you'd never know I had any children! My only problem was my scar was extremely itchy for the first 6 months

I have had 2 and I just looked for my scar and could barely find it. Cool! I hadn't even noticed it healed that well. (My son is almost 1).
I do have the shelf although I have never done much to get rid of it. Even so it is not very big.

My surgery scar is pretty big and still kinda dark its been six months. Its perfectly heeled. however even six months later i am having twinges of pain because the nerve endings are trying to reattatch which they may never do as my doctor told me. I do have the shelf problem as you call it. If its her first c-sextion tell her it does get better and you will stop hurting in about two weeks. Good luck mommy
