The outside of the fish stops growing but the insides continue to grow wich will kill the fish.

I think to a certain point a fish will grow to the tank size. But there are some fish who just are huge by nature. It all depends if you are thinking about the fish or not, some will move the fish out of the tank if it gets too big, and some will leave it in. A fish would'nt actually grow to the full size of the tank, but depending on the species of fish, it could get too big for the tank, therfore making the habitat more stressful for the fish.

SOME fish will grow larger if given a very large tank. However, you should always give a fish the recommended amount of space for it's full potential size- never try to keep a large breed of fish smaller by cramping it in a small tank.

Fish need so much room to swim and they do stop growing when they have run out of room but some species need to reach a certain size so putting an Oscar in a 10 gallon tank for the duration is not a good idea!

Fish are like any animal, depending on the "breed" will determine the size that they will grow. They will not grow to the size of their tank unless the tank is very small for a large growing breed of fish.

well fish dont grow to the size of your tank because once your tank gets to small for the fish, then your fish can die.it will die because the tank is to small your your fish to live in.like for example a koi.A koi is suppose to live in a pond or else it will have no room in a tank so it will die.i had a koi and i had a 90 gallon tank and the koi died because it was a foot long and it had no space to swim.

Fiction, most of the fish you'll buy at pet shops [ the shop will tell you] only grow small, unless of course it's a Red Oscars or some salt water fish.

I believe that some goldfish grow to the size that their tank will accomodate. I've never heard of this in other types of fish, though. Most fish suppliers can tell you how large a fish will grow - for example, an Arowana can grow to be a yard long.

most fish don't... some might but i don't know of any that do. I have heard that alligators will grow to the size of their tank, but I can't tell you from experience.

Personally, I think it's a nonsensical assumption but more than a decade of fishkeeping tells me that it's actually quite true for most fishes.
