I understand that for years it's been a point of contention in winter holiday-related advertisements, but last year, I had some people get visibly angry at me when I wished them happy holidays.
I just don't see where all the harsh sentiment comes from. I'm wishing them well, and they apparently assume I'm trying to undermine Christianity. Can someone help me understand this?

That's a good point, YAS. Even when I was a little kid and assumed everyone celebrated Christmas, I used "happy holidays" to mean the whole Christmas-New Years period.

i know i just noticed last year as well, mostly because of the news talkin about it so much, sayin how cristmas is a cristian holliday and people should remember that, or some crap like that, but there are also other holidays right around the same time, so it seems like sayin happy holidays would be the more pc thing to say, but its not, even if you ARE a cristian and refering to cristmas and new-years eve, just for the fact that its a busy time of year and you might not see the person youre talkin to till after both Holidays, people still get upset about it, ppl need to grow the F up

the artificial "war on Christmas" concocted by people with an agenda has taken a harmless phrase and turned it into a political litmus test.

And how many of these individuals are regular church-goers, one wonders.

It's ridiculous. I'm an old fart; I can remember "Seasons' Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" being used at least as far back as the early 60's, long before there was any hyper-sensitivity on either side to religious questions.

edited to add: I'm a Christian, also (every Sunday, back pew, potluck suppers, Christmas cookie exchange, UMW member and all that) but until someone wishes me a merry Ramakwanzachanamas, I'm not going to complain about a heartfelt holiday greeting of any kind.

i will clarify something that i latterly discovered myself. It helped me. Merry Christmas has been the norm in addressing needs in the course of the Christmas season. Now Christmas is surely Christ Mass. Then a even as in got here chuffed vacation journeys and evidently some would say this isn't perfect. yet now i believe it to be as i became informed; chuffed Holy Days. reason is through the years they purely shorted it from have a contented Holy Day to vacation. Then we've xmas, I actually were informed that that's the greek letter for Christ. if so then it really is Christmas in yet another variety. So for me I say Merry Christmas , chuffed vacation/Holy Day or perhaps xmas now has a Christ which ability. Christmas is the delivery of our Lord Jesus Christ which the international celebrates each and every 12 months. God Bless and performance an really Merry Christmas.

I have worked in retail for nearly ten years and I only noticed people regularly getting offended about two years ago. When I was a child I got corrected when I would write Merry X-mas on stuff, because I was taking the Christ out of Christmas.

I think Happy Holidays is nice to say because it is a general greeting- it works for all the holidays in december and new years.

I dont think people should be offended, there are more holidays than christmas out there...

Well many stores will not say Merry Christmas, so they can be politically correct. That is just going over board. I mean it is Christmas why shouldn't people be able to say Merry Christmas, because it may offend the minority that does not believe in Christ. Well Boo Hoo for them what about Christains rights?

As a Christian, I get insulted when people celebrate Christmas but "you know, we don't go to church or believe in the religous part of it". They don't mean to snap at you, they're probably just feeling the way I feel; like hey, there's not religous "part" of it, religion IS IT. Christmas isn't about giving to others and being nice, it's about the birth of Christ, and that's it. And if you don't want to believe in Christ, don't steal our holiday. I work at a bank, and I had some people get PO'd at me, too. I wanted to be like hey, I'm on your side. This year, me and you are starting a new trend. I'm not saying anything to anybody, I'll stick with have a nice day, instead of nice HOLIday.

Co-incidentally, it peaked when the conservatiive and evangelicals came into power. They like to scream "P.C.!!" at anyone who's trying to do the right thing. They also like to divert attention from real issues. I think you'll notice it quieting down now.

It appears (and I mean no offence to anyone EXCEPT small-minded people) that small-minded people are becoming ever more vocal regarding the ALLEGED offensive utterances that very small-minded people find offensive - which seem to be getting too numerous to even list. ;)
