there is no time limit and if you are getting a problem with activation then it means that you have significantly changed the hardware or you are using a pirated copy of windows xp.

The xp licence is for one pc only and when it says pc it means pc. Significant changes to the hardware could be deemed to be a new a pc and the computer will refuse to reactivate without you calling microsoft who may or may not reactivate your copy of windows for you.

I have reactivated my copy twice as I update my hardware fairly regularly and microsoft have on both occasions allowed me to do this.

Go to safemode, f5 or f8. Then try the recovery disc. Good luck! Don't phone Microsoft!
