as a way of saying "thank you for putting your life on the line for the U.S."... I say we give them a life pass on federal income taxes for active military service... at least for the most part... maybe up to like 200,000 a year... which would cover the vast majority for life...

everyone that didn't serve would just have to chip in a little bit more to cover it, but once it was all spread around it would probably be like $20 more a year... in the active miltary I would do that to thank them... I mean right now there is far less than one percent of the U.S. population in active service...

and also, it would be a great recruiting tool...

and just so everyone knows... I've never served... but I think it would be the least we could do...

what do you think?

first off... I doubt everyone would join the army... maybe I'm overstating people's cheapness... but getting shot at is not high on most people's list...

and if combat time was an agreeable middle-ground... then I'm more than willing to comprimise...

and I don't think many of you know why many serve now... many don't serve to "fight for freedom"... that's for sure...

some do...but many don't...

and the thing that some of you may be missing here... it would only be for those that made it into the Military... if there was truely a flood... then the Military would just tighting it's qualifications and only take the best of those applying...

Change that to "No taxes for life if you saw combat action." and you get my vote.

How about becoming a member of Congress? Senators and Representatives don't pay taxes but they don't get Social Security either.

It was brought up a while ago to Congress, but it was shot down, barely. The biggest reason was the loss of income to the Gov't. It was found out that the Gov't would lose about 9 billion per year if servicemembers didn't pay taxes. The oil companies make 9 billiion in PROFITS in one quarter but they don't get taxed any more. Even the windfall tax didn't go through.

I think all active duty servicemembers should be tax-free for the duration of their service. It would be a great recruiting tool and I would have a great plan for it.

1. Join the service of your choice.
2. Get through basic training
3. A year after graduating basic training and advanced indidivual training, begins the tax free status.

The services could make training hard and realistic. Make it an incentive to join and more importantly, stay in the military.

Tax the living daylights out of the oil companies and make congress pay taxes. The military keeps us all free and enjoying the freedoms we have. It is about time to reward those who make it possible. "No one appreciates a soldier until the enemy is at the gates..."

Really REALLY stupid, cause then everyone would join the army -and, yes you would have a large military, but then you would have NO public services, and public sector workers would get no wage, simply because nobody would pay taxes any more.

Perhaps a better idea would be a tax BREAK for those who served in the military - say 2-5% less tax?

And believe me - people WOULD join the army for NO taxes. Imagine how much money you would save!! People join the army to pay for their college education, and that's only a few thousand dollars. The amount of money you'd save over a lifetime from paying no tax would be maybe a hundred thousand.

I think we should make you president. However, considering the way that active duty and veterans are treated, it will never happen. They are cutting benefits (health care, disability, etc.) all the time for vets, and the pay, accommodations, health care, etc. sucks when you are in.

It is a good idea, but more realistic would be to take care of the people who are serving/have served a little better in the things that can actually save their life or keep them off the streets. Unfortunately, this will never happen.

no i dont think that it should be tax free. The reward for serving and putting your life on the line is the thaught that wow i have helped keep America free. Besides isnt America supposed to be equal and anyway if people found out that if you served you would get no taxes a lot of people would end up serving for all of the wrong reasons. Hope i answered your question.

I like your question, and I would have to agree with you on this one. I have several friends that are in the military and have been gone for awhile, this no tax for them would be a nice start for a thank you.

i totally agree.
my dads in the army and he's in iraq right now and no taxes would really help.
a lot of men risk their lives everyday and leave their families behind for a while.. so no taxes is the least we could do

I'd say no to that one. Military personel are US citizens, also, and get the same benefits as private citizens. Just because they risk their lives across the world does not make them immune to taxes. We would have to exclude any person that perfoms a public service or protection from paying taxes if we make an exception for the military.

We get more back than he pays for taxes. Maybe due to having 4 children.

But for the single soldiers - that would be great...

As a veteran, I love the idea. I just don't see the general public allowing it.
