I am looking at buying a house which is empty but one of the rooms has a ceramic tiled floor and the grout has furred/foamed up and is white in colour.
The seller says the foamy stuff is because the builder/bodger used the wrong grout?

Can any one shed any light on this

Cheers

I suspect either the tiles were laid when the concrete floor was still wet and/or there was no damp membrane fitted before the concrete was laid.
remove the tiles where the damage is and check out the concrete

The seller is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. The reason there is white foamy stuff is because of dampness, whether that be due to the room not being aired or a problem underfloor.Check the walls as there could be a problem with rising damp. If you really want this property get a good survey done and also ask for a reduction in price. When/if you make an offer tell them this is why your offer is lower. You could be buying trouble. remember it's a buyers market at the moment

there was either a water leak somewhere in the house or someone spilled an enormous amount of water and neglected to clean it up and it is in the wood under the flr.

dry out the room, clean the grout with bleach and scrub it in the grout lines, chk under the house and see if there are water stains in that area or possibly a broken pipe spraying the floor joists.

if this persists, scrape out the grout, or remove the tile and begin again.

The wrong grout?? Grout is grout.. unless they used something completely different. Grout is hard, like cement when dry. It is porous, but is still like a rock.

Fuzz/fur is mold.... something nasty under that tile (whole room?), or it hasnt been washed/cleaned properly..

Is it a basement floor room (cement underneath) or wood?
If you're serious about this place, bring a building inspector with you. Could save you $$$$ in repairs.

i agree with the others, this person is lying to you. grout doesnt get fuzzy, it is a cement like compond. there is a hidden problem, floor might be rotted out from what ever caused the wetness and mold. have some one check it structurally before you decided if you want to take your chances with whatever else they may be hiding from you..i would say to keep looking..
good luck

I don't no much about tiles or grout, but commonsense is telling me something's not right here. bring someone who no's about these things with you, before u go any further.
