Kennedy addressed his supporters shortly after Midnight June 5 in a ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Immediately afterwards, Kennedy and his entourage walked through a kitchen pantry, shaking hands with well-wishers and hotel staff. The small pantry was rather crowded, when a 24-year-old man named Sirhan Sirhan stepped in front of Kennedy and allegedly shouted "Kennedy, you son of a *****!" before firing a .22-caliber Iver Johnson revolver toward Kennedy and his entourage.
