The sinkhole is usually a manifestation of the problem. I don't know a way to fix a sinkhole without knowing its cause.
There may be an underground stream which would have to be diverted into culverts. It would be nice just to dump a load of dry concrete mix into the hole, but all that might do is to back up the water and cause you other problems -- may be more sinkholes.

Just an idea...call your local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) they are in the phone book under Government (and its free). They may know of an aquifer or underground body of water that COULD be causing this. Could be like others have stated- garbage or organic matter that is starting to break down and causing this problem.
You really need to find the problem before you go dumping dirt/etc in it.
Good Luck!!

fill it with dirt for the easy temp fix, or dig out all the stinky garbage for the permanent correct fix. If you choose the easy way you will have to keep doing it every year.

There are various sites on Google regarding sinkholes. A good description gives
www.depweb.state.pa.us/sinkholes.

not knowing if this is conducive to your area and considering it as just a hole, fill it with top soil and sod it back
