According to VH1, Zepplin was, but I think I'd go with Metallica, they started off by giving away (throwing cassettes to the crowd) there music (Imagine that, the one's who took Napster to court). And to this day it's said that they've not played to anything less than a sell out crowd. Not bad for 30 years of rock and roll.
