be very very careful!!!!! I always tell everyone this :
-do not verbally come to her about this, it could freak her out big time. do not tell her you want more soon off
-do not act jealous or stupid when she's interested in someone else
-try flirting with her a little bit and see how she reacts, read it. If she seems at all uncomfortable then back off, if she responds well to it be a little more flirty next time untill you're both on the same page and it's safe to open up a discussion about it

Above all > DO NOT, really, don't, do anything quickly. You must (YOU REALLY MUST) take your time and be as patient as you've ever been in your life. You don't want to ruin your friendship so you have to be careful, too many people make that mistake of "oh I like him/her now and I'm just gonna throw it out there on the table", no. You'll hate yourself for scaring your friend off.
good luck.

You will still be best friends if you want further. Will it ruin things? If you are both comfortable in that way, it'll be better. You can only ruining a relationship if you:

Flirt, have children too young, cause violence, or on drugs

It is an old and fascinating question. It depends, of course.
If you want soemthing that one may call "an exclusive" friendship
,do your best to reach your goal even if it means that
you may lose "what you have", as you wrote.
I think "true friendhsip" should survive
some "storm" like an "unsuccessful effort" to
turn friendship into a love relationship.

Try not flat out asking... the other day I had a friend I haven't talked to in forever ask me out, and OF COURSE it ruined the friendship. I found him annoying to begin with, but it's never good when fat, ugly people with crooked teeth ask you out... it's like "Eww..." because I saw him as one hundred percent platonic and the fact that he thought of me in that way... ugh. But if you're not completely hideous and insulting, it's not too harmful to take it a bit further, so maybe just ask her "Hypothetically, if I asked you out..." It works

If she says NO, then its more on your part of if the relationship will end or not. If you can get over the fact that she rejected you, and realize you are better off being friends, then the friendship should continue. GOod luck

The friendship basis is love. Love accept yes and no without changing. If really there is a friendship... never matter the answer.

It will only ruin the friendship if you are unwilling to accept the fact that it will not go any further.

you know your question is your answer tell her that she's your best friend and you would like to take it further but you are afraid to loose what you two have and that if her answer is no you hope you can continue being friends.
