the smallest particle in the universe is a quark,matter/energy cannot be reduced to a smaller unit

(but the theoretical super strings may be smaller)

The smallest 'thing' is still in debate. Electrons, Neutrons and Protons are the most fundamental "things" still widely accepted. The problem is various scientist have found several smaller particles (or so they think ) that comprise electrons, neutrons and protons. However, the problem with that is, that each new particle discovered seems to have different properties than the others which leads to confusion. As there is no common particle in all three Es, Ps and Ns. In fact, there is still a debate going on to determine if electrons are even particles at all!

Atoms, yes, they are made up of something. Namely neutrons, protons and electrons. So one of these three would be the smallest things in the world.

I would disagree with you in saying that neutrons, protons and electors are made up of something. They're not, as far as I'm concerned. You're more than welcome to prove me wrong, however.

At this point, it seems to depend on how much energy can be concentrated onto the target at the end of the "atom smasher" - the higher the energy, the more things are found.

Neutrons, protons and electrons are made up of quarks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarks

And if string theory is proven, we'll go one step smaller.

protons and nuetrons are made up of quarks, leptons, and newts. further down than that there is what they call "string theory" that super tiny strings i think on teh magnitude of 10^-35 meters.

Easy question. It is an electron. Not only is it the smallest thing. It has almost no mass.
