Your best course of action is NOT to buy a telescope, but find your local astronomy club. The clubs are family oriented & have great knowledgeable people with telescopes. The clubs set up "star parties" where members show the sky to everyone else, especially the new people. People get to know each other while they get to know the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters, galaxies & the rest of the Universe. While you're making friends & learning the universe, you also learn which telescopes & accessories work best on the celestial objects your family wants to pursue. Therefore, the telescope you buy has a less chance of ending up in the closet unused. Sometimes, if enough people bring food, a real nighttime food picnic starts up too! The clubs also have regular meetings in which professional astronomers & professors from local universities talk about their most recent studies. Its great to learn the Universe with friends instead of fumbling around on your own in the dark.

No, it is an urban legend. The story is that scientists calculating satellite trajectories would calculate them backwards for several thousand years. One time, they were off a day, and someone who worked there (a religious person) pointed out that in two places in the Old Testament, God stopped the Sun.

The problem is, NASA does not calculate trajectories in the past, only the future (why would they, anyway?) Second the person mentioned, a man named as Harold Hill, did not work for NASA. He worked for a company which worked for NASA in diesel mechanics.

No. It's another myth circulated by religious fundies to 'prove' the bible. Kinda like the myth that women have more ribs than men (we don't).

No. This is an urban legend that is passed around and is absolutely not true.
