well of course divorce is expensive and final, they say no one wins but the attorneys.
Legal separation...not very expensive and I've known couples who have used that separation as their rock bottom and recaptured their once passion in the marriage therefore reuniting.
But for those who know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they want to be finished with the relationship, divorce is probably the end all responsible thing to do, especially nice when it is uncontested. Might want to check into the "Tax ramifications though if that's an important factor.

In a divorce the parties' legal marriage is dissolved by a court & they are free to marry others.
A legal separation is simply a legal agreement between two married parties setting forth how they will dispose of jointly owned propertry & joint obligations; child residence & visitation, contributions of support to each other & the children. People can opt to have a court approve & enforce the agreement by filing a separate maintenance petition with the court & obtaining a separate maintenance judgment or decree. Or the parties can reach the same agreement & have the court adopt it & enforce it via a divorce judgment or decree.
These days many people postpone divorce for insurance reasons.

divorce is when you signed the papers that have decided for you two not to continue to be husband and wife . separation is when you are married but each person is living in his and her own accommodation. this can be done when you are both waiting for a divorce,or are not sure about each other ( whether to live together or not) sometimes a separated couple ends up knowing more about each other than when they are together, change their minds about the divorce and thus cancell the divorce proceedings.good thing of a divorce is that you can start dating any one you so wish, but although its hard at first, you may as well ends up paying the debts of the partner who have left the house to you.this involves the housing bills etc. you may also ends up lossing(taken away) your properties. for example if you are married in community of property, every thing which you once owned need to be divided among you and your partner.the bad thing of a separation is that, it can be hard to be alone again, hoping that you may get back together can build a hope especially if you are still in love with your partner, but on the other side can build jealousy if your partner seems to find a new lover. it will be difficult to cope with the separation while at the same time see your partner happily in love with some one else. there are hundreds of reasons or pros and cons

legal seperation means your still married
but you finances at that point are seperate, this is done to protect one self from any future debt incurred by the other party.
divorce ( really it's called dissolution of marriage ) terminates the legal and binding contract that you entered into when you married ( yes married is a corporation merger as the state see it ), you become once again a solo entity and free to re-marry ( make another corporation merger ) with another, though they may be some penalties for breaking the past merger ( alimony, child support ). you no longer have any legal rights or are bound to ther other party ( like decision to pull the plug, or any other life altering decision that only a spouse can make ).
