Yes, it is true..but apparently this is not the only reason Lions lose their manes. Also, when are lions really castrated except in zoos. Anyway here is a site that talks about it:

Could be feasible as the mane is a feature that develops with the sexual maturity of the lion caused by testosterone. Testosterone being formed in the testies.....it a deprivation of it may cause its mane to fall out.

i dont know about lions but i used to have a panther and when my missus made me 'get him done' coz she got fed up with him trying to fcuk her leg every time she got home, he not only suffered hair loss but started hanging around with the local poofs and taking short weekend breaks to brighton!!!
