I do not know much about gaming, but I do know that laptops are better for college. A lot of colleges are now wireless campuses, so a laptop comes in handy! I have a desktop (which I love so much) but there are many, many times when I wish that I had a laptop. You should also check with your school and make sure that you are able to have a desktop (without a laptop) because I have heard of many colleges making laptops a requirement.

I didn't go away to school but I did this project for my MIS class. Laptops are easier to fit in a dorm room, esp. if you share with someone. One friend had a laptop, she loved it, but it was more problem-prone and she had to send it back to Dell twice. The other had a desktop and loved the way it worked, didn't have any problems with it, but admitted it was a pain to cram in a dorm room and cart back and forth when she came home for the summer. Performance wise, they're about the same, laptops do tend to be victims of theft and are more fragile (cuz you're tossing it in the car, dragging it to class, etc). Desktop will probably be cheaper, on average. Even staying home, I wished I'd bought a laptop only because my family often didn't leave me a place to do homework (my brother took over the computer room and when he wanted me to leave my mother made me leave, despite the fact that I was doing homework and he was drinking beer and smoking pot) and I share a room with my sister and she's the baby so what she says goes. Anyhoo, besides my whining and crappy homelife, a desktop would've been fine for my tight budget.

Go laptop. From my experience in college you are better off since they all have required laptop programs for starters. If you wish to fight it like I did, ask them about the specs a desktop[ would need to compete with the school's system. If you live at home you can transfer stuff to the desktop at home? (safe keeping and backup)

Laptop
-Pros: portable, convenient
-Cons: more expensive than desktop for same "guts"
Desktop
-Pros: less expensive
-Cons: bulky, non-mobile
Personally, for college, I think that laptops are better fit for a student than desktops.

I would think a laptop would be better for a college student. It definitely saves space - especially when space is very limited, is portable so you can take it wherever you feel like getting schoolwork done. I know several people in my classes tote their's to class to take notes.

A laptop with a wifi card (and ethernet card).
Get a USB flash (thumb) drive to.
You might want to go to the library, the cafe, or to someone else's dorm to work on a project.
I'd also try to figure how to protect it from theft (like with a LoJack).

If you like to type your notes, or use web sites or WebCT with your courses, I'd definitely go with a laptop. It is a pain lugging it to school everyday, but it made my classes a lot easier.
