I think it totally depends on the type of door and what you have to work with! Some doors have small screws that can be removed from the handle without damaging the door, is there any attic or crawl space access to the room? You could call a locksmith or buy your own little tools or use a hair clip or paper clip... try the window but I doubt you'd want to break it! Try to take it off the hinges; Some times you can use like a credit card or flexible but sturdy slim plastic or metal to slip behind the latch and slowly work it forward to get the latch to release. You could knock it in (kick prefered over body bashing I think) and hope the latch that is keeping closed releases (or breaks) and not the rest of the door.

Use a small screw driver and flashlight, peek at the slot in the lil hole on knob to locate slot and it's angle and then insert screw driver and turn. You might also check along the top of the door frames where many builders place the lil keys that come with the doorknob when they build the house and many homeowners never even know they are there! If it's a actual keyed lock you can pick it easily with a tension wrench and pick but if you break it off then yer gonna need alocksmith anyways..

If it's a privacy lock (as opposed to the kind of lock that uses a key) that has a hole in the handle on the non-locking side, use a slender object such as an ice pick, hat pin, bobby pin, etc. Put it in the hole, and you should find a hard object that can be pressed inward. Do so, and that should pop the lock and allow you to open the door.

I would either:
1) Hire a locksmith to open up the door
or
2) Break down the door.
