As for sports-

I think Americans, in general, are very competitive. The fun is in the competition.Of course, most people want to win. For "big time" sports (professional and Olympic) there is a lot of money at stake- for the players and the sponsors. As a result, there is a lot of pressure to win. Americans want to see a well-played game- both sides giving it their all and demonstrating some wonderful athletic abilities.

For holidays- again- it's like a competition. Who can get the most and best gifts (for example- Christmas). There are other holidays where seriousness is a part of the holiday. I am thinking of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is also a serious holiday. Americans recall a great Civil Rights leader and his sacrifice to bring equal rights and justice for all.

Other holidays are just plain fun- like Halloween (Trick-or-Treating to get candy).

Holidays can demonstrate the generosity of Americans, too. Many donate time and money to make sure the less fortunate have nice holidays (Christmas and Hanukkah. Some will send money and gifts off to foreign countries to make sure children do not go without a toy or two at Christmas.

I hope this helps.
